Alter a Ledger means modifying or editing the details of an existing ledger account in TallyPrime.
When you alter a ledger, you can change information such as:

Altering a ledger means correcting, updating, or modifying the information of an already created ledger.
📌 When Do We Alter a Ledger?
You may need to alter a ledger when:

GST number needs to be updated

Address or contact details change

Ledger is placed under the wrong group

Opening balance needs adjustment (before transactions are entered)
🪜 Step-by-Step Process
Step 1️⃣: Go to Gateway of Tally

Open TallyPrime
-
You will reach the Gateway of Tally screen
Step 2️⃣: Select Alter (Under Masters)

Choose Alter under the Masters section
(Or press Alt + G → Alter Master → Ledger)
Step 3️⃣: Choose Ledger

Select Ledger
-
Press Enter
Step 4️⃣: Select the Required Ledger

A list of existing ledgers will appear

Select the ledger you want to modify

Press Enter
Step 5️⃣: Make Necessary Changes
You can modify details such as:

Ledger Name

Group (Under)

GST Details

Address & Contact Information

Bank Details

Opening Balance (only if no transactions exist)
⚠ Important: If transactions are already recorded, changing the Group may affect financial reports.
Step 6️⃣: Save the Changes

Press Ctrl + A to Save
The ledger will now be updated with the new details.

Press Alt + G → Type or Select Alter Master → Choose Ledger.
✅ How to Delete a Ledger
❌ How to Delete a Ledger in TallyPrime
If you have masters (such as party ledgers) with no recorded transactions or no future business use,
you can delete them using the methods below.
🧾 Method 1: Deleting a Single Ledger
- From Gateway of Tally, select Alter.
- Select Ledger and press Enter.
Alternative: Press Alt + G → Select Alter Master → Choose Ledger. - Select the specific ledger you want to delete.
- In the Ledger Alteration screen, press Alt + D.
- When confirmation appears, press Y (Yes) to delete.
📂 Method 2: Delete Unused Ledgers in Bulk
- From Gateway of Tally, go to Chart of Accounts → Ledgers.
- Press Ctrl + J (Exception Reports) → Select Show Unused.
- The List of Unused Ledgers will appear.
- Select multiple ledgers by pressing the Spacebar on each.
- Press Alt + D.
- Press Y to confirm deletion of all selected ledgers.
⚠️ Important Constraint
You can delete a ledger only if no vouchers (transactions) are linked to it.
- If transactions exist, TallyPrime will not allow deletion.
- You must first delete all related vouchers.
- After removing the transactions, the ledger can be deleted.
